Aneurin Bevan

Aneurin Bevan (1897-1960) was a Welsh politician known for his central role in the establishment of the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom.

Early Life

He was born on 15 November 1897 in Tredegar, Monmouthshire, Wales, into a working-class family. His father was a coal miner, which deeply influenced Bevan's political views.

He left school at 13 to work in the coal mines. He became an active trade unionist and was heavily involved in local labour movements.

Career

He was elected as the Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for Ebbw Vale in 1929. He held this seat until his death in 1960.

As a leading member of the Labour Party's left wing, Bevan was known for his fiery oratory and strong socialist convictions. He was a key advocate for social justice and public welfare.

The National Health Service (NHS)

He was appointed Minister of Health in 1945 under Prime Minister Clement Attlee's post-World War II Labour government.
