German Grammar

Use this story as an 'interest getter' on language courses.

Tobermory was a very intelligent cat and Cornelius Appin was able to teach him to speak English. Cornelius Appin was later killed in Dresden Zoo by an elephant which had shown no previous signs of irritability. When Clovis heard about this he remarked: 'If he was trying German irregular verbs on the beast, he deserved all he got.'

Adapted from Saki (1912) The Chronicles of Clovis.
